How to Install and Update a CAC Reader Driver
If you have a CAC reader you may sometimes need to update the driver in it or to install a new one. Here are some directions:
First, plug the CAC reader into your computer. Some of the newer computers may start automatically start looking for the right driver via the computer’s hardware wizard. If this happens, you likely won’t have to do it manually. To see if your CAC reader installed itself through the hardware wizard, follow these tips. Be sure the CAC reader is plugged in:
Windows 7, 8 and Vista
Right click onto “Computer” and then chose “Properties, Device Manager” and once there, go to “Smart card readers,” and click on the triangle to get it to open. If you see your CAC reader listed, then it’s time to install the most up to date DoD certificates. NOTE: An alternate way to find the reader is to go to Start and put devmgmt.msc into the run box.
Right click onto “My Computer” and then chose “Properties, and the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager Button, and then onto Smart card readers, and pick the plus sign beside it to get it to open. If the CAC reader is seen in the list, it is ready for you to install the DoD certificates.
What if it doesn’t work?
Go to Device Manager, then Smart Card readers, and do a right click onto your CAC reader. If it isn’t there, try looking under unknown devices. Then you have to uninstall it when you see that option. When done, take the reader out if the computer. Wait a minute or so and then put it back. If it doesn’t try to reinstall a driver or if your driver isn’t listed, follow the directions below:
Installing CAC Drivers
First, you will need the correct driver for your type of CAC reader. There are several kinds of readers, to include USB, keyboard, desktop computer, and those on laptops. You can find drivers on the manufacturer’s page for your device, or try doing a Google search for it.
Checking if CAC Reader Works
Once you download the proper driver for your CAC reader, you may have to unzip the file prior to loading it. You will need to do this with a program like WinZip, which can be downloaded free online. Once you have downloaded and unzipped the file, then you can double click on it in order to load the new CAC reader driver.
Next, you should do a “check services” to be certain that your CAC is working. You can check this by going to “start, run or search (depending on what version of Windows you have) or by typing into the search or run box: services.msc. Then to to the Smart card section, open it with a double click, put it on automatic and click on Start.
If it doesn’t show or it doesn’t start, and your Acitive Client software doesn’t find it, then you may have to try a few other ways to get it going such as these:
